Grandad was too old for WW2: St. John Ambulance

Hi Guys, my Grandad served in the Royal Artillery on the Western Front 1915 to 1918 and in 1919 served in Koln in the Army of Occupation. Come WW2 he was over age for military service, so he served in the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which was part of the Civil Defence.

My Dad recalls his dark blue civil defence BD and greatcoat which my Dad later wore to school due to clothes rationing after the war!

My Grandad was presented this silver tankard in recognition of his service.

This small silver "medal" has a bar for each years service.

I am not quite sure of the use for this badge? It is about 2 inch across and is curved. I don't think it is a cap badge? Held on by a split pin fitting.

My Dad says he will find a photo of my Grandad in his SJAB uniform. If he does I will add it here.

I also have a question. I have his WW1 trio of medals. But I also found a single ribbon bar for the WW2 Defence Medal, but not the medal itself. Would he have qualified for this medal for his St.John Ambulance Brigade service in WW2? It was classed as being part of the Civil Defence / ARP.

I have one parent veteran of WW1 too...Serjeant-Major Leslies Gilbert Moojen (Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery) - promoted a Second Lieutenant, and as an Adjutant, Indian Volunteers in 18th Octuber, 1915 (Font: London Gazette) ...in 1917 he was been granted temporary rank or temporary Commission under "Memoranda" for duty the Royal Flying Corps.

PS. Note the last name (mother part) ... in England my family have "Moojen" last name and in Holand "Mooyman".

Hi Jack, I cannot answer that one. My Dad does not know. My Grandad died when I was 16.
