    Medal Bar Help

This medal bar has come into my possession and I`ve no idea what medals the bar is for. Also its very grubby, I take it its best left as is, and no attempt be made to clean it? Any help with this would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

Well three of them are easy:

    1939-45 Star
    Burma Star
    Defence Medal

No idea about the last one but that is a MID "Mention in Despatches" I do believe!?

      G'da Ian

Yes, it is best left as it is.

What you have is the ribands to the 1939-45 Star, the Burma Star, the Defence Medal and a MID (Mentioned in Dispatches) oak leaf emblem. Is it mounted on a piece of white cloth? It would normally be mounted on the ribbon of the War Medal 1939-45. If this medal was never awarded then it was attached directly to the uniform, in this case with that award absent the recipient has used a rather clever mounting style that I do not believe I have seen before.

Thanks Ian and Johnsy , this bar is not in my collecting interests, what would an estand value be for it?

        Cheers

Seem odd to me someone would get the burma star and not get the War Medal 1939-45?

I think that if the MID was issued before the 39-45 was it was worn sewn to the uniform. I would surmise that this bar dates prior to the 39-45 being awarded.

So we then know this bar war created before

              16 August 1945

The date when the War Medal was created (or soon after when they were issued)

Sort of makes this one special.

              Neat item.

Odd, but not impossible, or it was never claimed, or this medal bar was made up prior to the award being given out.

That MID bar was sticking in my mind last night and I knew I have seen something like it before.

                  Then it hit me.

I have a copy of this famous colour picture of Gen. Slim

and after finding it under a pile of other stuff and having a look at it sure enough the last item on his ribbon bar was exact match for the MID bar above.
(You can't tell from the img above unfortunetly)

I remember trying to figure out with a friend what the last ribbon was and we never came up with anything so one little mystery is solved.

Not that the above bar was Sims but may-be the orginal owner used the same tailor?

Most likly bars like this were simply thrown away when the new bar was issued/bought so that accounts for no-one seeing one around these days.

Seems like this obscure little item is taking on a life of its own.

So do you think its General Slims medal bar then?
                    Any idea of value?

                    Cheers

                      Never said that!

IMHO what it means is that the bar can be easily dated and we know exactly what theater it was used in.

Like I said perhaps the had the same tailor.

Opps I had emoticos off so I did not see the ha ha guy.

As for value as much as some one will pay for it. Unlike most Medalbars we know approx when and where this was put together not sure if there is a big collector community out there though

In the eveny that the MID emblem does'nt relate to service which earned a medal & ribbon, it's sewn directly to cloth that matches the uniform, so they can appear on cloth of a variety of colours - presumably khaki, red & dark blue will be the most common.
