This is what looks like a silver medal with crown and letters "ATA" over lV. On the back are 4 hallmarks. The medal is aprox. 1 3/4 inches tall. Please ID it for me. The hallmarks look like "GK&S" (Maker <SP><SP>Kenning, George & Son ), a lion (England), a leopard head (London), and letter "O"(1909) . What was this made for?

What you have is the Army Temperance Association (India) medal for 4 years staying off the 'pongaloe' - no mean feat. It should be suspended from ribbon very similar to the Military General Service Medal for the Napoleonic wars, i.e. crimson with dark blue edges - a bit like the DSO but slightly broader.
These temperance medals were hard-earned. It must've been so tempting to go on the pop rather than spend the evening playing cards and Bible study! They are quite collectible, and this is one of the less frequently encountered specimens.
The hallmark is 1909.
