I've had this for about 35 years, the certifcate folded up in its metal case.
George Bateman was discharged from the Leicester Regiment of Militia an 1810 after a couple of years service, on count of having "incurable blow (?) of the leg".
I don't know much about miltia of this period, there was a lot of recruiting around Leicester at the time I believe (& presumably a lot of other places) because of the war with the French, & I believe a fair amount of activity involving the Luddites.
Does anyone know about this unit at this time?
