RCAF Squadron Crest Question

About a week ago, I started a thread that asked the difference between an escadrille and an escadron. I wasn't satisfied by the answers, probably because I asked with respect to the RAF.

Here are some post-war 409 Squadron Crests from the RCAF, one with Escadrille and the other with Escadron. What is the difference?

Hi Dennis, I cannot help with an answer, but the question now makes much more sence to me, given that it is Royal Canadian Air Force and not RAF related

Dennis, I think this has to do with Cdn Forces being bilingual. My French isn't good enough to understand the nueances in the French usage of escadrille and escadron but this is what I suspect.

409 Squadron is located out in BC I think, but those who serve in the squadron are from all over Canada.

Escadrille and Escadron are french words

Escadrille translates to Squadron
Escadron translates to Attack Sqadron

Yes, the terms are French and were officially changed from Escadrille to Escadron in accordance with CANFORGEN 003/89 on 14 Feb 1989. Both terms mean "squadron" and this change affected all of the squadrons in the Canadian Forces. Do a search with google and you will find all the details you need.
