Unclaimed WW2 British medals - Help!

    Hi,

My God Mothers Dad passed away about 1 - 2 years ago, and when he was alive he told me that he didn't claim his war medals out of principle, - he didn't think he should have to tell the army where he served, as he was given a sheet to fill in saying which theatres of operations etc he had served in.

Well she's asked me to see if I could find out how to claim his medals, as he's still entitled to them. Please could you guy's try and help me as it is really important.

I know the MOD still have stocks of unclaimed medals so my hopes are quite high.

    Regards
    Phil

Hi Phil, you will need to write here:
Army Medal Office: Government Office Buildings, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, WR9 8AU.
    Hope this helps?
    Cheers, Ade.

Hi Phil, I wish you sucess in your application. I am going to write to them myself in the next few weeks as my Great Uncle was an Air Gunner on Sunderland flying boats and was killed in 1944. I suspect his medals were not claimed, so I am going to see if it is possible to claim them, as my Dad is his nearest NOK.
        Cheers, Ade.

While most of the ones I deal with are named out of the Mint (Indian), I get the sense that the guys in the UK are very, very picky. Saving themselves work? Seems to be global with medal offices? Good luck.

In some ways, not as easy as it is in the US -- getting my great-grandfather's federal Civil War medal issued in 1965!

            Ade,

Good luck in your application also.

Do you know what information I am best to include, do I need his service number or just his name and Regiment?

            Regards
            Phil

Hi Phil, include all the info you can; date of birth & death, full name, service number, Regt. or Corps, date of enlistment & discharge will all be helpful.
              Cheers, Ade.

And if successful in surmounting all the barriers Officialdom can throw up, do let us know whether they are actually still issuing out Old Stock, or are making horrid new stuff.

When I got my deceased grandfather's U.S. WW-ONE Victory Medal in 1977, it was a mint, silk ribboned 1920 ORIGINAL!

Rest assured, there's still plenty of original stock medals in storage at Droitwich.
