Indeed they are a scary thing. These were not a issue item per se and were made up at unit level. I would really want some kind of provenance with one of these before I would part with my cash.

Agreed Ade they are a realy s##t scary thing. I think the one I would want in my collection would be the factory made variant issued to the NZ troops. They have a tag and some stamps which all makes it harder for the faker

I've seen at least 2 on ebay.de lately so, unless someone has found a barn in Flanders full of them I'd treat them as being a little suss.

One factor you chaps have not considered........

What would happen if you stretched the cover over a helmet and the cover sheared into two pieces? Old sack cloth degrades when stored outside. Clearly someones got 100 pounds burning a hole in their pocket.

Before I invested 100 in this I would like to have a look at the condition close up.

In all honesty Tony I feel the same about medal values, but each to his own, at least it means we aren't all chasing the same things. Having said that though I don't think I would have wanted to pay a ton for that one .

Talking of sackcloth

Talking of sackcloth helmet covers in a not too dis-similar manner,

.. How about the helmet nets we see used on para helmets with the sackcloth strips tied to the netting. !
.. I suppose theres no way of telling if you have a geniune one of these or not ?

I had ONE once that I was happy with. Came from a veteran and was in a terrible state. The sacking was just torn bits of spud bag (not this coloured stuff you see everywhere) and it stank to high heaven. I think Ade and Les saw it at belters. Got eighty quid for that 4 years ago. Which in retrospect does seem a trifle obscene
