That sounds like a very plausable theory Peter.
When I got the spoon, it had recently been found on the battlefield, and was quite diry, and had sand incrusted in it. I cleaned it with water and tooth brush, so it now looks rather new.
I got the spoon in a situation similar to this... This old guy had a few relic buttons in a little bag that he preciously kept on him.
