Presumably meant to anchor some fitting - helmet spike? - which got removed from time to time. Bolt looks too long to be a badge fitting.

I thought maybe a lanyard for a weapon even may not even be military ?

I think it’s from a black powder pistol and it screwed into the stock so you can attach a lanyard. Rob

I think I just discovered a possible clue ? This is likely the estate of one man who after WW1 joined the AFS and then stayed on with the Bradford fire brigade
