            If there are any inside pockets the inside of those pockets are a good place to look!

              No pockets, but I found that in the inner sleeve. Unfortunately not readable.

                It certainly looks like an RE full dress tunic from the turn of the last century. The facing colour on the cuff looks black and not royal blue, that that may just be the light. What a pity that the tailor's label[s] are missing - it must have had them when new. Below is a link to an example 'RE circa 1910' from a British dealer. It looks to be a pretty close match.

                  a fine example of a late victorian officers scarlet frock/tunic, the rear gives a better insight to dating these from my experience

                      tunic is for a major or colonel, royal engineers as already known from the buttons, date is 1881 to 1902
