Can anyone identify this British uniform ??

I have a portrait of a British officer that was painted during the British occupation of Philadelphia in the winter of 1777-1778. The officer wears a red coat with dark blue facings.
Does anyone know what units might have been serving in America at that time wearing that pattern uniform jacket?

    Thanks!!!

Dark blue facing suggest a "Royal" regiment.

      Thanks, Leigh!

Now I just need to find out what "Royal" regiments were in winter quarters in Philadelphia at that time.

The penultimate paragraph gives the units involved.

Well, this officer shows no distinctive lace on his uniform.

I found that the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, "The Black Watch", wore red coats with blue facigs, and was quartered in Philadelphia that winter.

No way to prove it one way or the other, but it is a fine regiment!

Try the Chew house museum. Ben Chew hosted many officers at his house (including Andre) as his daughter was a stunner. They may be able to help you, as there were only a few portrait painters in town @200 years ago and some of them had lists of subjects.
