    World War I medals

    Folks,
I finally found my grandfather's miniature medals. Includes Mons Star, Long Service and Good Conduct, Meritorious Service Medal. The medals have suffered over the years. The ribbons needed cleaning a replacement and to be remounted. Anyone know of a reliable service in either the United States or the UK.
    Thanks

    Mark,

In my opinion you should leave them as they are and mount them.

Could you please tell us more about your Grandfather? I am very much interested in the Guards Regiments for WW1. They were the elite regiments of WW1.

Which one of these Grenadier RQMS's was your grandfather?

      1. Oakly
      2. Spearing
      3. Smart

Horace Allitt 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards

Folks come attached is a photo my grandfather from World War I. He's wearing the 1914 star ribbon. I'm not sure what rank based only shoulder insignia. I believe the photo is taken about 1917. He initially joined the grandeur guards in 1910, after serving in the Cambridge territorial unit. He went to France in November of 1914 served for about 28 days. His unit was involved in the first battle of Ypres. I vaguely remember him saying it he get frostbite of his feet and nearly lost them. The regimental history by Ponsonby seems to bear this out. He returned to France in 1916 through the end of the war. Later served in Turkey. Finally retired in 1929. Later served in the home guard during will or two. Very kind, gentle soul.
Remarkably, I visited Wellington barracks, about 10 years ago. I asked if I could see the officer the day as I understood my grandfather's medals have been donated to the guards Museum. At that point is introduced to a retired Colonel Smiley. My wife and I were invited into the administrative area served tea. My grandfather's original metals were shown to me on the wall. Colonel Smiley later copied my entire grandfather service record for me. An incredible day.

The photo showwing the medal ribbon being worn should'nt predate 1917 as the ribbons were, I think, only introduced in that year.
