Flight Sgt sounds right, cloth chevrons with brass Kings Crown above, ASR patches are scarce, I know where to get a good quality repro (ie convincing fake) from a local shop.
thanks to all who have helped again...I am satisfied with " flight sergeant" and thanks for posting the photo of the chevron..now I know what they look like in color! I am very surprised that Brittish militaria is so scarce here in the US ...so much american and german stuff and so very little Brittish.. you have all helped alot and I thank you ....if anyone happens to stumble on to a chevron , crown badge or ASR patch please drop me a line..thanks again from myself and my father..Chad Williams
Just to add a bit to the discussion: Colour-Sergeant does exist as a rank but it's an army rank used by certain infantry regiments. It's equivalent to Staff-Sergeant in other army units or Flight-Sergeant in the RAF. This may be where the confusion originally arose. I have no doubt that your relative was a Flight-Sergeant, however. Good luck with putting your memorial together - it's a great idea!
Yep, just to clear it up a bit, 3 stripes and a crown in the RAF is a Flight Sergeant, in most Army Regiments it's a Staff Sergeant and in the Infantry a Colour Sergeant ( In days gone by, the Senior Non Commistioned Officer SNCO, detailed to carrier and protect the Kings/ Queens colours, the Royal identification of a Regiment.)
thanks for the clarifications, it all makes some sense now, and my uncle Basil is somewhat vindicated as you have shown me that the color sergeant is an equal rank just different branch! thanks to everyone..Chad
