Royal Navy query ?

Hi guys I have just received my grandfathers WW2 service record he was in the Royal Navy and it has a list of ships and what not that he served on, I was just wondering how can I find out what these ships were and what happened to them in the war if possible?

Adam: here's a start for you - there will be more to come shortly - watch this space:

PIONEER =ex HMS Mars, maintenance vessel
ARGONAUT = Cruiser of 1941
GOULD = Frigate (an ex USN ship) sunk by U358 1.3.1944
GLORY = Aircraft carrier of 1943
SULTAN - Battleship of 1870 used as Training Ship

Here are some more, Adam:

HMS Flycatcher was a RN Air Station, formerly RAF Ludham. It was only turned over to the Navy for a few months - Aug 44-Feb 45, before being returned to RAF Fighter Command use. It is located near RAF Coltishall, near Norwich.

HMS Excalibur - Choice of two, shore based post-war training depot, or 1950's experimental sub.

HMS Drake - RN barracks (also a WW1 Cruiser, sunk 1917), Plymouth - sailors demobbed here post-WW2

HMS Drake 1V - probably a sub-unit of the above

HMS Appledore - Combined Ops training base, located at Appledore, Devon

James: the forum is www.britishmedalforum.com . It's primarily a medals forum, but well worth the visit even if you only have a passing interest in things medallic. Some terrific groups being showcased over there and ton of usefull information from some very advanced collectors (much like the information we find on this wonderful forum!)
