    Dear Larbanais,

The green insignia is the color insignia for 3 Para, third battalion the Parachute Regiment.

    Regards Steven.

The square and the circle may represent different companies within the Battalion too. It was standard, for example, in the British armoured corps in WWII, to use a triangle [representing 'A'] for A Troop, a Square for B Troop and a Circle for C Troop. The two shapes you show may have similar meanings.

Almost ! The geometric shapes actually represented the squadron, not the troop, with the number of the troop painted within the shape; so 3 tp, 'A' Sqn would be a number 3 within a triangle.

I don't know if this remains current practice, but it was certainly stil being done in the 1980's.
