Hi JL, the reason they were asked to turn in their weapons was that most were worn out and potentially defective due to a lack of proper maintainance and non availability of spare parts due to the nature of the battle. Some soldiers did not even take their weapons back over the Rhine with them, as they destroyed them before swimming the river.
One soldier I know from the unit, Laurence "Solly" Scott GM, carried a Bren during the battle; he wore out all the spare barrels and so had to switch to a No.4 .303. When ammo ran low he picked up a K98. He used this for the last few days of the battle and accounted for several of the enemy with it. Solly brought it back over the Rhine with him. Again he had to turn it in. Solly thought it was a good rifle.
Hi Justen, the rifle is a deact. and is a Canadian made No.4
Cheers, Ade.
