The book by Hans Fallada written in a mental institution directly after the war is a very good book to read. It is based on true events as you say.

I watched the film and like many people I’m usually disappointed with film versions but I thought it was very good.

I’d recommend it. It’s not a shoot ‘em up though.

Many of Fallada’s works are post WW1 and up to WW2. I really enjoy them for the scene setting of that period in Germany and the build up of the NSDAP as it comes to power, very much in the background of the stories.
