Fort Graveyard 1965 ‘血と砂’ Directed by Kihachi Okamoto.
An excellent film, well worth the watch. It's a long movie but once you get into it it's hard to stop. With the typical Japanese ending. And I thought I had seen every Mifune Toshiro movie! 2:11:55 minutes long.
It's not for everyone.
"A war film like no other, 'Fort Graveyard' presents a rather literal 'band' of brothers, with each soldier addressed by the name of the instrument he plays--Little Drum, Big Drum, Piccolo, Trumpet, etc. The tone fluctuates between light and humorous and dark and nihilistic, but this inconsistency is actually a strength, as the characters become likable and familiar, and thus the carnage from the war scenes takes more of an emotional toll. Director Kihachi Okamoto is an excellent director of action sequences, and this film maintains his reputation."
