    A new book about SS-Polizei-Division

A new book about SS-Polizei-Division, write by Massimiliano Afiero

The Polizei division is one of the less well-known and less-treated Waffen SS formations, chiefly because of its only unit affiliation to the Waffen SS itself, being mainly formed with elements of the German Police and the Army. Initially, it was dealt with as a second level formation and was therefore equally equipped and armed. Even with regard to its use in the forefront, it was always committed as a reserve force, especially during the country's western front in the 1940s. But as often happened in the history of the Waffen SS, even for Polizei the fire test will serve to make it To become an elite formation thanks in particular to the exemplary behavior of his wards and commanders on the battlefield and in February 1942, he was finally transformed into a true SS formation, officially becoming the SS-Polizei Division. The division remained at the forefront of the East, still in the Leningrad area, until 1944. Meanwhile, its reorganization and its transformation into a unit of armored grenadiers was started and some of its departments were engaged in Greece, since 1943, participating in the struggle against the partisan bands and the harsh reprisals against the local civilian population. Then they fought in Banat, Romania, Hungary and along the Slovak border. The complete division at the beginning of 1945 was transferred to Pomeranian to participate in the counter-offensive to deport the Soviets from the territory of the Reich and then to the Gdańsk bridge head. Eventually, the Polizei departments came to fight in the northwestern area of Berlin, opposing them with all of their advance forces in the Red Army departments, sacrificing themselves to the last, then settling down and surrendering to the troops Allies. As has been done for all the other volumes in this same collection, dedicated to Waffen SS divisions, the discussion of the topics is accompanied by numerous testimonies, documents, extracted from the official bulletins, the division diary of the division and hundreds of photos and maps . The appendices also show the (short) history of 35.SS 'Polizei II'.

244 pages, color cover, many photos and documents.

This book arrived today and I would highly recommended it for anyone interested in Ss-Polizei Division.

This first edition is in Italian but you can still decipher the unit names, locations and dates etc. There are many hundreds of original photographs most of which I had never seen before, many from private collections (including C.Trang). Including combat photos as well as personalities. Approx 250 pages of text, pictures, Maps & tables covering the division from formation in Germany through to France, Leningrad and beyond. Including order of battle, Kampfgruppe and army group assignments.

To give you an idea there is approx 13 pages on the France campaign. Which is almost as many as in 'Die Guten Glaubens Waren' the definitive division biography.

Hopefully the English edition will get a hardback print run. I will definitely order the English language edition when it comes out next year either way.

                "New"???

In 2012 Mark Yerger published a 633-page 2-volume study of the DKiG holders of the SS Polizei Division that included a very good history of the division. In 1971 Friedrich Huseman published a 1,169 page history of the Polizei Division plus a separate 225 page volume of photos. At only 244 pages, what the heck is NEW about your book? I suggest that you devote your energy to writing something original rather than attempting an inferior version of what someone has already written.

Good question. I would like to know how many archives were consulted (and referenced to!) in this new book? How many archival ref. notes in total?

I think you should read the book first and then judge. Does yours just look envious? What did you publish on the subject? In the book are included information and photos that have never been published before, check as well.

I've read the Friedrich Husemann 'In Good faith' & the Yerger German cross in Gold Polizei volumes, also others like the Imhoff Chronik and the Pichler book as well as unpublished work. This is still one of the Least written about SS divisions & there is room for this book in my view. The Husemann one is definitive but has no index and can be fairly dense in parts. This one is a modern production, presented in an easier to follow format, is very heavily illustrated with mostly unpublished relevant photographs and once the English language edition is out should generate more interest in this division.

FYI there is also another SS POL Div book coming out next year from a different author

There is always room to write books, new infos or war time pictures that surface over the years give always space for new updated works.
I am interested on the subject naturally, I will read it.
I really enjoyed the books on the other SS Divisions by Afiero, so I am sure it will be intetesting .
I like expecially his point of view in describing the events and the personal stories of the members of the SS Divisions.

"six italians, dressed in rather unusual diving suits and equipped with materials of laughably little cost have swung the military balance of power in the Mediterranean in favour of the Axis".

Fortunately there is someone who judges the books without counting the number of pages. Thank you guys.
