    Favorite WWI Movies

We've discussed some favorite World War II movies, so how about WWI (and related time periods). There are lot of great movies that I've heard and not seen. Of course All Quiet on the Western Front is a classic.

    Among my favorites:
    *Hell's Angels
    *Captaine Conan
*The Red and The White (Russian Civil War more than WWI but overlapping time period)

    Any other favorites?

"Regeneration" the adaptation of the Pat Barker classic is in my opinion a brilliant film. Well worth watching if you haven't already.

            Regards Richard

Heard a rumour a while ago that Sebastian Faulks "Birdsong" is being made into a film, personally I hope it doesn't as no film can do this book justice.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

Did anyone see The Trench? I believe it is a British made-for-TV movie. Not bad...lacking in effects and the end was a little lackluster. Interesting character study.

I think the Blue Max had some great flight sequences, and I already mentioned Hell's Angels. And does anyone remember Shout at the Devil? It was a little campy but I love the sequences with the German navy at the beginning. Too bad that isn't on DVD.

I thought "The Lost Battalion" was good.

[ PATHS OF GLORY is just brilliant , the scene near the start of the film as Kirk Douglas is walking towards the camera along the trench ,passing the crouching men as the explosions are going off showing them in dirt , that image is worth the entrace fee alone , at the minute ,my personal no .1 is
`THE HILL ` with a young SEAN CONERY about the british military prison in North africa ,regards ,Michael.

Most of you probably aren't aware but there is a good movie out currently with WWI as a backdrop. Some very good seens in the trenches. It is in French and it is even a good one to take your wife, girlfriend, date, etc. too.

                      The Grand Illusion

Grand Illusion is a worthy piece about some prisoners of war in German camps. It's a 1938 French flick directed by Jean Renoir (son of famous painter). Eric von Stroheim is a blast as the Prussian comandant. Hitler hated it's anti-war message and had it banned. Some guy stored it away and survived the war.

I'm with coastie, "The Lost Battalion" is really good, even with little Ricky Schoeder starring in the lead role. Very nicely done and a true and tragic story. MOH awardee!

What about the original "All Quiet on the Western Front"? Not the Richard Thomas/Ernest Borgnine one. Oh, not the greatest accurate movie, but "The Blue Max" with all those planes!!!

My favourite is definitely "The Blue Max" followed closely by the original "All Quiet of the Western Front".

"The Lighthorsemen" is probably my favorite followed by "The Lost Battalion" then Gallipoli, All's Quiet" (both versions).

One that you guys have missed and REALLY need to get a hold of is "ANZACS; The War Down Under." It was really a minseries, but can be watched in one sitting. One of the stars is Paul "Crocadile Dundee" Hogan. The uniforms are FANTASTIC and the movie ranks near the top of any war movie I have ever seen.
Go rent it, you will NOT be disappointed.
