    Saints and Soldiers

Has anybody seen Saints and Soldiers?

It's based around the Malmedy massacre.

I've seen it listed as showing in the US since the end of last summer, but can find no information regarding a UK release.

If anybody has any information regarding this release, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

Edit: Have found it on import from The Netherlands and Asia, but that's it.

    Edit2: Nobody seen it?

I saw it a while back and it is a pretty decent movie. Not one I would watch over and over however.

It was a decent film, but some of it I just couldnt believe. Like the scene where the German soldier tries to rape the Belgian mother. I just couldnt fathom that and wondered why they included it.

There were some cheesey moments. Still, I liked the uniforms and weapons. They tried hard to be correct for the period. And the guns sound like guns because they were real guns. I believe they fired over 5000 blanks during the movie. Finally a K98 and Garand that sound right.

Well, it is something like A thin red line...Lot of talks and some action. Nevertheless it is in my collection It is not the one which you will be coming back to too often though

I find it a nice movie and good to watch. Not too much action, but the action is good! And...the guns sound like guns indeed. But, you cannot compare it with "A thin red line". Thats a different story.

Comparing both I had in mind two parallel grounds being presented - interior portraits of the main characters and the war action - I found it similar in both movies - of course it had been done differently in both of them but in general they are using the same... 'tool'.

                  Thanks guys.

I don't think I've actually seen it released in the UK cinimas yet (if it has been, it's come and gone very quickly).

I was thinking of ordering it from Amazon.de. It's not even listed on Play.com or Playusa.com.

I may give it a look.

                  Regards,

                  Mark.

                    "Saints and Soldiers"

I just watched it 30 minutes ago and I think it was extremely well done. The most accurate portrayal of the Malmedy tragedy on film yet. The pacing of this film is a very good mix of action, tension, and character development. Smartly filmed using volunteer reenactors, donated vehicles from collectors, professional actors, and a production crew with a passion and determination to tell this story. The director commentary is a must.
The producers made a concerted effort to portray the Germans as human beings, not just mindless evil drones. There are numerous scenes laced throughout the movie that put a human face on the German soldiers. Very refreshing and long over due.
This movie was made for just under 1 million dollars. I think that "Saints and Soldiers" is 100 times better than movies I've seen that had 300 million dollar price tags. It got 14 film festival Best Picture awards, not from film festival jury panels, but from paying audiences. I highly recommend this movie!
And for all you youngsters and action junkies; war is about a lot more than just pointing a gun at the guy on the other side. Just talk to a combat veteran.

I purchased the movie and watched it last night. While it was not "action packed", the movie was extremely well written. As said above, a lot of attention was placed into the circumstances of the massacre as well as the equipment, uniforms, and ect. I definately give it a .

I watch a lot of movies and to get a good war movie is a treat. There are better war movies, sure, but this one was a good one. I liked the massacre for the way it went off. Interestingly, it almost lets you believe that it just happened and was not a planned event. That is my take anyway.
Now for the next movie on DVD......DownFall?....

I saw this in the theaters about 3 weeks ago, and yesterday saw it for sale in Walmart. They must have had the videos already produced while it was still in the theaters. The movie to video gap gets closer and closer everytime.
