I became involved in Mike's SS Knight's Cross project almost a decade ago. Circumstances at the time meant that I couldn't work on my own books, so it was a good way to keep in touch with the creative part of this hobby. It was also a good way to help out my friends Mike and Martin Mansson, who is also a major contributor. Between us, Martin and I provided hundreds of photos, many new or very rare. I also, just this year, gave the manuscript a critical reading, and provided many factual additions and corrections.

I'm invested in this project. Why is it worthwhile for others to read this new book? Well, Ernst-Günther Krätschmer's Die Ritterkreutzträger der Waffen-SS, first published in 1955, is 34 years old for its last major update. A lot of new information has emerged since then, along with corrections to the details he provided. Further, his book is only in German, and a majority of those interested in the topic, outside of Germany, aren't able to read German.

Jost Schneider's Their Honor Was Loyalty is dual language German-English. It was first published in 1977, and then updated in 1993, 23 years ago. Again, much new information has emerged, and his book has small errors (as do my own, fwiw). Even the second edition is long out of print.

Volume 1 of this new project, The Knight's Cross Holders of the SS & German Police, is now available. It is in English, it is more accurate than previous works on the subject, it has details not found elsewhere about certain awards and decorations earned by its subjects, and it includes many new or rare photos. If you already own copies of Krätschmer and Schneider, then perhaps you don't need this. But the book should still be a useful addition for those new to this field of study, those who struggle with the German language, and those who simply want to learn more about the men it covers.

I have just recieved my copy of Michael (Milller's) Knight's Cross Holders book , and to be honest it is what I expected it to be a good quick referene book to give an overview of RK Holders within SS/German Police.
Awards, promotions, fate of holders are given along with a good range of photographs for the subjects and I see no reason for me to feel short changed, for me this format works okay. I paid £20 plus postage from Amazon uk.
Bibliography names all sources and the author has thanked those who have contributed to this thread via Achnowledgements and bibliography sections.
To me it is a more detailed and user friendly book than Jost Schnieder's book but in saying this I do not detract from that author's work nor will I be selling or parting with the 1st and 2nd editions of that book.
i do not see why I would not buy the other books in this series.
Would I have liked the book to be a hardback , yes but publishers have gone for a soft back.
Helion have again done a good job in terms of layout , font size, clarity and photo reproduction which are all fine.

For the most part, very kind and generous observations from people whose assessments- of this and any book on the topic- I profoundly respect.

        Thank you *very* much.

        Best wishes,
        ~ Mike

When this book was first announced I was one of those people who thought : "Not another book on this subject !". However I now admit I was wrong to think this. This book is very good and important to have as it indeed addresses a gap in the documented history of the SS/Polizei in the English language. Previous books by Jost Schneider on the subject are now dated. Kratschmer's book is in German and not completely accurate. Jurgen Karl's book is good and has outstanding photographic material but it is also in German. Mike Miller's book is well constructed, informative, factual (it is neither "pro" nor "anti") and most importantly in English. I am very glad I bought a copy and I am very much looking forward to the future volumes. Once complete it is a very much must have reference for an important subject. Congratulations and thanks to the author and publisher.

I am deeply honored by those comments, knowing as I do that they come from a true gentleman and scholar (one for whom that is not a mere cliche but the most apt label available).

                Thank you very much.

                Sincerely,
                ~ Mike
