1945: The Savage Peace on UK BBC

Showing tonight, 24th May 2015 @ 22:00 on UK BBC Two (and iPlayer shortly after)

    1945: The Savage Peace

When the Second World War ended, the people of liberated Europe celebrated their freedom from Nazi tyranny. Their years of suffering had ended, but for millions of Germans, the end of the conflict opened a new and terrible chapter.

The Savage Peace reveals the appalling violence meted out to the defeated, especially to those ethnic Germans who had lived peacefully for centuries in neighbouring countries. Using rare and unseen archive film, the documentary tells a harrowing story of vengeance against German civilians, which mirrored some of the worst cruelty of the Nazi occupiers during the years of war. The Savage Peace includes the unique testimony of eyewitnesses and victims, who recall the horrors with searing clarity, their memories undimmed 70 years after the events took place. This a story that has, until now, been untold amidst the justified celebration of an end to an unspeakable tyranny. But as the writer George Orwell said, the treatment of the defeated Germans was a terrible crime that has gone unpunished.

In my opinion this documentary shows the BBC at it's best.

Although I found it very difficult to watch in places, due to some of footage and the eye witness testimonials it is a stunning piece of documentary making.

If you can't access the iPlayer, someone has already posted it on YouTube....

As mentioned some very graphic and shocking footage. The mindless bloodlust for revenge against the surrendered German Soldiers and sadly Civilians appeared overwhelming to the native populace.

Kudos to the BBC for tackling this subject.

What brutality we Humans are capable of is truly shocking.

Should have been aired at an earlier time though.

More people need to know about this part of history, not the 'rose tinted' view the masses have of 'us and them' we've all been fed for 70 years.

All ages seem happy these days filling their time with brutal computer games and fictional films, yet we feel the need to ' protect ' their sensitivities from REAL human brutality. There are also people today, openly substituting computer war games with the real thing, because it's more fun.

Good documentary, there are also good books on the subject. Like this doc, hard at times to take on board, but the other tragedy is that the behaviour exhibited then, still happens to this day and could happen to any of us. Just a question of the right or wrong circumstances.

A similar documentary on the bestiality exhibited by Stalin and his cohorts before ww2 , on their own people and those of the once independent countries around mother Russia. That's another part of 'history' that needs openly telling to the masses.

Nuff said, before someone chimes in about ' lightening up and not being so damn serious.

Retribution can be very bitter, mostly brutal and in this case not unexpected.

I do feel for the children.

                    Cheers.
