'The Americans' - Cold War tv Series

    'The Americans'

I started watching this on netflix and I think it's very impressive so far. Up to season 2 (out of 4). It's written by a former CIA officer and is based in the very early 1980's around the time of the Reagan assasination attempt and onwards. Great seeing all those cool old cars, fashions and music etc. Story revolves around a KGB sleeper cell and network and how they target, surveil and get information from their sources while avoiding detection/death. It has some strands of historical truth mixed into it and lots of Cold War paranoia on both sides. Numbers stations, dead drops, radio surveilance and number codes, sources who flip their handler and so on - lots of fun ! One of the good points I thought was that it's good to see a woman character who was not all meek, this one is like the one out of 'Gone Girl', well able to manipulate her way up and down the place in addition to being combat trained and half-sociopath. Also interesting that the FBI/CIA are not exactly shining knights here, they are shown getting their hands dirty from time to time as well. Is anyone else watching this ? What do you make of it so far (no spoilers please).

I watched this show for the first two seasons, but I grew tired of the soap-operish aspects of the main characters, and frankly, had no sympathy for the deep cover KGB agents. I have not viewed any episodes this season.
The series is critically acclaimed, so it's probably just my old curmudgeonly self that's the problem.
