Watched an interesting Nova program about the discovery of U-166 in the Gulf Of Mexico. What made the whole thing special was the reclassification of who gave it the fatal hit and the claim for the sinking. Evidence now shows it was a ship depth charge and not from a plane drop. The best thing is the US Navy agreed with the findings and gave a medal to the ship captain with the family claiming it. Tons of nice underwater views of the sub.

well I always find it interesting as I am in the oil offshore bussiness..then its an interesting wreck...the whole front part of the sub after the deck gun is missing....in the program do the show that part front part or only the main wreck?
guess if it was a depth charge if it hit the fornt and torpedos ordenance went off guess that part just blew in pieces.....
ugly way to die....

YEs the recent dives have found the front part and show it on the program. It is a twisted mangled pile of metal. From that they conclude it was a depth charge that landed almost on top of it setting off the torpedoes.
Another interesting part of the story was the after action reports gave the Captain an F grade for the attack. HE was removed from the ship and given a desk job.
YEs so sad a way to die. THe crew rushing to the front for an emergency dive and then getting blown up. At least it was a quick death for them.
