Has anybody read either of these....?

A Stranger to myself: The inhumanity of War: Russia 1941 - 44 by Stefan Schmitz

Grandfather's Tale: Tale of a German Sniper by Timothy Erenberger
    http://www.amazon.com/Grandfathers-T...ZH8EZJNRCZ77GP

Both only seem available on Kindle unfortunately but haven't looked elsewhere for hardcopies.

    Hi Allan,

There have been a couple of threads about "Stranger to Myself".

    Here is one:

I read a while back and liked it. As you can see from the thread the authors writing style divided opinion. I think for the price you are not going to lose any sleep if you don't like it.

    I haven't read "Grandfather's Tale"

    Cheers

      Hi Ian,

Apologies, I didn't remember ever seeing it before. Looks likle it could be an interesting read. There's plenty of hardcopies available for both and I prefer to reserve the Kindle for fiction.
The Grandfather's Tale was actually of more interest so I'd still like to hear if anyone has read it.

      Cheers
      Allan

A stranger to myself is a good memoir, altho not one of the best. It is full of angst.
        Grandfather's tale is fiction.

Grandfathers tale is simply crap- I got it as a present- It´s a fictional story written by a self professed gaming expert who wrote the book in the style of a computer game scenario details added that rather fit an American life than a German one in the 20s. It´s just the imagination of a 17 years old pimpled college boy who played a lot with his ps 3 (at least it seems like that).

Ok! Well that settles that. Thanks for your input.

The author of A Stranger to Myself is Willy Peter Reese. Stefan Schmitz is the
editor. The book itself I thought was pretty good being as it is the story written
by Reese the German army recruit/veteran in his young years, and he was killed/
MIA in early 20s, the manuscript was found after the war, translated and published.
To me it is a valuable and useful book, valuable because as a manuscript it was not
lost to oblivion, and useful because it is truly a grunt's eye view by an articulate
              and young writer.
