    Alberta in the 20th Century

"In between periods" so to speak, i purchased two volumes of the 12 volume set entitled: Alberta in the 20th Century"from a local antique Mall.
The set was published in the 1990's.

    The 12 volumes :

VOLUME I - The Great West Before 1900

VOLUME II (1900-1910) - The Birth Of The Province

VOLUME III (1910-1914) - The Boom and The Bust

VOLUME IV (1914-1920) - The Great War And Its Consequences

VOLUME V (1920-1930) - Brownlee And The Triumph of Populism

VOLUME VI (1930-1935) - Fury And Futility: The Onset Of The Great Depression

VOLUME VII (1935-1940) - Aberhart And The Alberta Insurrection

VOLUME VIII (1939-1945) - The War That Reunited The Province

VOLUME IX (1946-1962) - Leduc, Manning And The Age Of Prosperity

VOLUME X (1962-1971) - The Sixties Revolution And The Fall Of Social Credit

VOLUME XI (1971-1984) - Lougheed And The War With Ottawa

VOLUME XII (1984-2000) - Alberta Takes The Lead

Interested in the First and Second World Wars, I purchased Volume IV and VIII.

They are both large hardcover books at 370 and 410 pages each.

All entirely relating to men of the Canadian Armed Forces in both World Wars from the province of Alberta.
Simply stunning in detail and pictures. If you ever lived in Alberta, many men mentioned in these pages were from those very same towns

VOLUME IV (1914-1920) - The Great War And Its Consequences

The Cover - Lieut. Harcus Strachan, a six-foot, 28-year-old rancher from Chauvin, Alberta, leads a detachment of prairie boys of the Fort Garry Horse back from a daring attack on German artillery positions as Canadian troops spearhead the advance that would bring the Great War to an end. Many of Strachan's men and his commanding officer have been killed. His courage and tenacity in the engagement won him the Victoria Cross.

VOLUME VIII (1939-1945) - The War That Reunited The Province

The Cover - In a sombre dawn, two members of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, the West's famous "PPCLI", peer across No Man's Land for indications of a German counter-attack at Ortona in Italy. The grim Battle of Ortona, which one German General called "Little Stalingrad", was a major Canadian victory in the Second World War. The two are identified in the archival records as Sgt. Charles Lord (right) and Pte. Richard Greaves. Their home towns are not given.

Yeah .. I was so tempted to buy the whole set especially since they were offered at about $6.00 per volume and in almost mint condition. But alas ... my focus was on the world war years ...
