I had to purchase this book from Australia (where it is published) Its the story of a well off family who helped jews escape and voiced their opposition to the Nazi government (bravely or stupidly ?) The author Hans Roland was born in 1931 and describes his childhood and family disasters under the Nazi s , it has to be said that his mother and some other members of his family where just as bad ! That said , this is an interesting memoir full of interesting insights of the times , Hans ends up in an ss trained special formation of boys and sees action on the eastern front , his adventures towards the end of the war are incredible and pull no punches on the atrocities he witnessed from both sides. Its unusual to read such a frank account from which the author describes his own participation in executions in the madness that was the end ,a good unusual read this
