No Saving Private Ryan here in Atlanta

The Atlanta AB affilate has deemed Saving Private Ryan "Indecent" because of Language and Violence, and won't air it tonite. Its been aired uncut in 2000 and 2001 ,but the affilates say that new FCC guidelines now make the language too profane to air,and are afraid of an FCC crackdown as happened after the superbowl. personally, i think this is a POOR decision! Would love to read others thoughts

From what I read and what I saw on TV, it's a result in part from the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake episode, some of it has to do with the likes of Howard Stern, People are starting to flinch and the PC crowd is jumping in with both sets of boots.

Yes, all of a sudden the major networks are worried about violence and language. They picked Veteran's Day to get all moral on us. Amazing huh? As if a movie like Saving Private Ryan is going to teach the wrong values.

Selective PC if you ask me......

          Yeah. Well.

Get ready for plenty of more selective censorship. For the next four years, anyway. Don't wanna show a movie like that in the middle of an offensive...

I think you are (again) completely missing the point, and barking up the wrong tree in in the wrong forest.

The FCC has already stated that it had no problem with SPR just like it had no problem with Schindlers List. They said that the violence/language was not gretorious in these two movies. Makes me wonder why ABC, or specificly, the Murdock group( the ones who did not run the Nightline tribute to the fallen soldiers earlier this year) keeps using the FCC as a reason for not showing this. I think its for the same reason they did not show the Nightline program.

                Very pathetic.

I will watch it here in Portland. And I will cry like a baby when that medic dies. I always do.

This isn't ABC's decision. It is the affiliates, worried that they'll face calls from local viewers. The irony is that I remember back in January many people bitching on this very forum about the Superbowl incident, and how something needed to be done. Some folks even said they'd call and/or write the local stations to complain. And look at the results!

As the movie is on DVD anyway I just sort of laugh at the irony of the situation.

I remember a report in South Africa in the 1980s, the South African Defence Force (SADF) was working with the South African Broadcasting corporation (SABC) to bring what they called "Sabre Rattling" films on television, this, they assumed would help maintain the publics interest in military matters, heroics and adventure.

At the same time it was the SADF that pushed to give "Full metal jacket " an age restriction that would allow noone under the age of 21 (!!) to see it, they figured it was too realistic and would "turn people off".

What kind of shadow thing is this FCC ? "We cannot ban the film, that will be censorship...but..." is like saying "We will not make public rules... we will however draw an invisible line in the sand... and if anyone crosses it ... "

Willi... you were all keen on the FCC when they sanctioned the media for showing a bit of tit... and now you find them PC Nazis because they sanction ultra violence.... actually... do they? They have not done anything when the channel played the movie in the past... makes me wonder why the channel NOW suddenly does not want to play it?

Eric... You cant really blame this on the "other side"... the FCC (correct me if I am wrong here) is not repub imposed censorship... it is from the lefties as well... after all.. it was Tipper Gore that started the ball rolling with the PMRC way back in Mötley Crüe days...

What I love about these arguments... everyone is for...or against things like the FCC... depending on the subject.

Guys that were glad Jacksons tit was banished... are angry that they are interfering with SPR... And guys who would have loved to see the other tit as well are up in arms because of a little shooting.... FLIP FLOP !!!

This was an orchrestrated "event" by ABC. As long as there are warnings about language and content, the FCC has no problem with these types of movies. This was an attempt by ABC to push the idea they are being censcored, and by the responses here, some of you bought it.

                              Hi,
WHY does ABC want to do that? do they have a box full of snuff movies they want to air and cannot?
There must be a REASON why they do something like this.
