      Hi,

I have watched most of this documentary on You Tube after seeing this thread, and all the footage appears to have been shot in Bergen-Belsen and Dachau.
I have been to both of these KZ, and the modern day differences could not be greater.
Dachau is still mostly intact, whilst Bergen-Belsen has the foundations of the prisoner barracks; the mass graves and many modern monuments.
Will probably buy this DVD when released, for the superior quality images and narration.
Most of the film seen in this documentary has been seen many times, but small fragments are new (at least to me).
The Holocaust should never be forgotten, although both camps featured never had a gas chamber for the killing of people.
Death seems to have been an eventuality for most people sent to these two camps without the use of gas:- overworked, beaten, starved, disease, cold, brutal guards and "psychological discomfort" was the order of the day.
Some people think the Holocaust never happened......how sad and unable to face reality are they?
A major crime against the human race was perpetrated in Nazi Germany and ordinary German people were (mostly) not to blame.

      Best wishes,

      John.

        Hi,

the Mémorial de la Shoah from Paris did some conferences a few months ago about the various well known allied directors who filmed the liberation of the camps.

You can be sure that during the showing of the movies the amphitheatre was deadly silent, everyone with a bad taste in its mouth (to say the least).

        See You

Why must it not be forgotten? I have been reading history for some 25+ years now, and basically the only historical event commonly commented, often with emotionally laden rhetoric, with "must not be forgotten", is the holocaust. Yet, from a historical point of view, such rhetoric is not due. During the 20th century alone, at least 6 large scale genocides occurred (Armenians, Ukrainians bu Bolshveviks, Jews, China under Mao, Cambodia, Rwanda), so singling out one of them is simply misleading. What is more, 3 out of those 6 were carried out by Communists...

            Hi pasoleati,

I believe that the holocaust should never be forgotten because the German nation were a European, highly cultured society where their "rulers" decided to undertake a systematic and industrialised extermination of people who a few "radicals" decided were unfit to live.
You quote several other genocides, mostly of a tribal or cultural nature which were mostly not concieved or acted upon in a calculated; systematic manner.
This is why the "holocaust should never be forgotten".
Because a highly cultural, European society could (due to a handful of extreme racists) "liquidate" another race, and anyone (freemasons, gay people, the mentally ill, Communists, Socialists, Gypsies etc) who did not fit their world view.
If I had been a Nazi leader, I would have kept quiet, because very few of them fitted into an "Aryan" ideal, which is a load of nonsense anyway.

            Best wishes,

            John.

John, this is not the first time I have read this explanation. However, I find it very problematic. First, it has a very implicit racist connotation that suggests that non-Europeans are lower forms of life who are less responsible for their actions.

Second, the overemphasis on "calculated, systematic" manner is misleading and from the victims' point of view, quite insignificant. For example, if one studies the Rwandan case, the killing was carried out in a most calculated and systematic way. In fact, on occasion much more systematically than the Jews as e.g. a Polish Jew might have had a far poorer chance to survive than a German Jew (especially those with partial Jewish background).

The same applies to genocides carried out by various Communists. There was very much an element of calculation and systemics involved. That the victims were often selected on non-racial basis should not cloud it. Remember, for Bolsheviks there were only two kinds on people: us and them. And them were to be totally eliminated, should the chance arise. It does seem that people either don't know or don't want to know what Bolshevism and Bolsheviks were. It has to be unique in history that a government that praised itself as the most egalitarian and humane ever was composed mostly of career criminals: Stalin, an accomplished bank robber and mass murderer, Vyshisnkij, a killer-for-hire and so on. Simon Sebag Montefiore's books on Stalin are really interesting eye openers on this.

                Pasoleati.

You're clearly a very intelligent man (I presume).

You've genuinely prompted me to rethink and find more information on systematic deaths.

Victors publish the history and all that may have caused me to narrow my focus.

                Regards,
                Chris.
