The Leibstandarte in Greece, from Martin Stiles and B. Radovic

I have just got the new Schiffer publishing book wich authors are Martin Stiles and Branislav Radovic.
The titke is "Leibstandarte in Greece" and is the photographic story of the 1st batallion LAH during Operation Marita.
The book is fantatic, with a lot of unknown photos and very interesting captions and reveals the actions of this unit during Greece campaign.
It is a real pleasure to see the fantastic photos, and in some of them, we recognize Dietrich, Witt, Peiper and more Waffen SS personalities.
I would strong recommend this book for all collectors intersted in waffen SS and in LAH in particular.
    Thanks!
    Vic

I would second that, fantastic book with photos printed on glossy paper for excellent photo reproduction. There are a number of photos I have not seen before.

I received my copy a couple of weeks ago and although I've only had a cursory look through it, was actually a bit disappointed.
From what I remember, it's just a reprint of albums from the Leibstandarte archives and centres mostly around personelle. With very little on vehicle details I found it's contents repetitive and I've never been able to understand why publishers print a black & white image in colour.
The book's the same standard you can expect from Schiffer but I've had a few volumes where the quality of the printing leaves a lot to be desired.
Certainly an interesting study in uniforms and some personalities, but I think it really falls into the category of pretty picture book.

          LAN in Greece

Having the opportunity to stock the book in our shop i decided against it, as per Herr Lyppe's comments i found the uniform studies interesting but not interesting enough to warrant the price on a book that is in effect a picture book.

I find it annoying that publishers/authors do not take note of RZM's "God, Honor, Fatherland" on how a good photo book is done.

                    LAH in Greece

I bought this book on Amazon, got it signed at the Farnham Maltings show by co author Martin Stiles & talked to him about it. Looking at the book you have to remember the main source was 2 photo albums which had no captions for the photos, so any imfo had to come from observing the photos only. General imfo is available from LAH books but not helpful when dealing with most of the photos. I liked the book, but it would not suit somebody looking for an account of the LAH in the Greek campaign.

Few people grasp what it takes to write any book at all and even photo books are not easy at all.
Time, money, nerves involved. Royalties for authors are way less than USD 1,000/title for our types of niche books.

Individuals who put themselves through the writing and publishing process over various years in order to contribute to our hobby and interests always deserve my highest respect.

Some books have a stronger focus on pictures, some more on history. I buy 4-5 books per month always trying to find the perfect blend. If it's available in one title (photos+information) that's great, if a book only offers infos or photos, that's also fine with me personally. I hardly ever feel overpaying. And honestly, in our hobby, where we spend USD 100 easily on a lousy EK2, the term "overpaying" cannot really apply to any book, providing true history.

I'm glad the authors of "Leibstandarte in Greece" made the efforts to publish this fantastic series of unpublished photos concerning the I.Bataillon "LSSAH" for the enjoyment of the general public.

The authors might as well have chosen to keep these for themselves and not sharing them (they certainly did not have monatary aspects in mind) and that would have been a pity in my opinion.

                          Enjoy your day.

                          Markus

                            Lssah in greece

I can only but agree with Markus; the book is a gem for those of us who are ardent students of the Waffen SS! Publishing a work is indeed hard work, and I tip my hat at all those who make the effort for the rest in the hobby!
