    Trip to Bayern this Christmas!

Hey all, I am going back to Bavaria and was curious if anyone knows of any good history books chronicling the war in specific cities such as Nuremberg and Munich. I am looking for a book that we can reference as we go through these cities and understand what happened there in '39-45. A factoid/history/picture book if that makes sense. It doesn't have to be a travel book...history books are actually prefered, but I just need it to be centric around the 3rd Reich and related battles in Bavaria.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

    Hi

The Third Reich Then and Now, by Tony Le Tissier is pretty good, though it is a bit bulky...

Just bought it off of Amazon per some other people I asked. Thanks for the advice!

        Hi Jordan,

I found the small Pastfinder books convenient and a good way to plan your own walking tours. They're small and available for both Munich and Nuremburg.
You'd likely find the Then and Now book far to cumbersome to lug around with you.

If you get a chance get down to Berchtesgaden. It's an absolutely beautiful place and you can take a trip up to the Eagle's Nest (Kelsteinhaus) while you're there.

        Cheers
        Allan

Agreed - Berchtesgaden is indeed a beautiful place, however, the road upto the Eagle's Nest closes in October due to the weather.

          Best,
          John

They also close that road on other random days (as I discovered) depending on the weather.

              Hi,
When in Munich you can book a walking "Third Reich" tour of the city with a guide who will take you around the town (takes about 1.5-2hrs) which is quite interesting.
Meeting place for these tours is the Rathaus in the morning around 10am.
A basic tour and a "luxury" tour exist - the luxury tour including a meal in one of the places where Hitler used to speak.
However, use the rail system to take a 35 minute trip to Dachau KZ.
Free buses pick you up from the rail station to take you to the camp and back on a regular basis.
Walking around Dachau KZ takes up around five hours of anyone's time!
              Hope you enjoy your holiday,

              Best wishes,

              John.
