God Save the Tsar: Military Band Music of Imperial Russia in Archival Recordings, 1900-1912
This landmark album presents period military music from the lost world of Tsarist Russia, performed between 1900 and 1912 by the bands of the Russian Imperial Army and other musicians of the era.
Compiled from ancient and ultra-rare recordings held in private collections in Russia and the USA, its twenty five tracks include regimental marches of the Russian Imperial Guard, classic parade marches of the late Russian Empire and historic military band pieces from the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.
Also presented are instrumental and vocal versions of the Russian Imperial Anthem God Save the Tsar [Bozhe Tsarya Khranii], descriptive scenes depicting the Russian Imperial Army in battle and on the march, a rare parade piece written especially for the twenty-fourth birthday of the future Tsar Nicholas II while he was still heir to the throne, Russian soldiers' songs of the period and many other historic musical treasures, all of which have been restored for maximum audio fidelity.
The CD also includes a lavishly illustrated 36-page booklet presenting a detailed history of military music in Imperial Russia, notes on the featured musical selections and a discussion of the reign of the last Romanov Tsar, Nicholas II.
