books from the perspective of a German solider

I would be interested in reading an autobiography from the perspective of a German soldier, particularly one who was fighting for the German ideal. (a book that has been translated to English, obviously).

If that doesnt exist, how about a 1st hand account of life on the ground of a frontline Wehrmacht soldier fighting on the Eastern front.
(Afrika doesnt interest me as much).

I remember 20 or so years ago, there was a book entitled "Dear America, Letters home from Vietnam"... I would be interested in such a book from the German perspective, if one existed.

What I am most after, is a real-time play by play, not necessarily a post-war book written by someone who feels guilt after post-war awareness..

Apologies in advance if this has been asked for prior, but as you can imagine, this subject doesnt easily fit into the search field.

I am currently reading 'Grenadiers' by Kurt Meyer, Waffen SS General and I would def. recommend it. It mainly deals with his campaigns in Poland, the Balkans, Holland, France 1940, Karkov on the eastern front and Normandy and moves at a breakneck speed in recounting his encounters with the enemy. It also details his capture and subsequent war crimes trial . Its published by 'Stackpole military history series' and contains some good pictures. Meyer was a dyed in the wool believer in the National Socialist movement and although we would never have had a meeting of the minds in this sense, I have come to admire his courage, honesty and fighting spirit.
