Waffen SS memoirs in English -new!

    Hi All,

I am new to the forum and saw a request for further information regarding the following title on a previous post. I thought I would share with those who may want to order a copy, where to do so as well as bring to attention another title coming in the near future. The title in question is "Hitlers Teenage Warriors: A Memoir of a 12th SS Hitlerjugend Soldier" the Author served in a mortar platoon through the invasion battles and eventually is captured by Canadian forces in mid August 1944. Book is a small print run and is available signed from Wing Leader books (see link below) in the UK.

Wing Leader will also be carrying in the near future Manfred Thorn's (1st SS in Russia, Western front and Ardennes/Malmedy) memoirs. I have been informed that Thorn's book is very thin on page count and will be available in a couple of weeks. Wing Leader informed me that Thorn is currently writing a much more detailed (warts and all) book to be published later in German/English. Manfred Thorn's wife is very supportive of this endeavor (btw he is in his 90's and still works!) and feels that he should write a true no holds barred account of his time in the Leibstandarte. I have been told that any encouragement for Manfred to complete his memoirs would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Todd

Isn't Manfred Thorn's wife Hazel Toon-Thorn? She's the one who helped Jan Munk put the I Was a Dutch Volunteer book together.

I'd love to have a long, honest work from Manfred Thorn. Not that he was dishonest before, but the true story of the LAH is gradually emerging, and it would be good to learn more. The last veterans are showing more willingness to discuss what it was really like in the last years of the war. There was a sense of despair in parts of LAH from the beginning of 1944 onward. They had been successful up to that point, even at Kursk, but the winter 43-44 fighting was a meatgrinder which ended without victory. Then Normandy was more of the same, and the Ardennes too. But the failure, and the imprending defeat of Germany, couldn't be discussed openly. It was instead, "Carry on to victory."
