Ingrao, Christian." The SS Dirlewanger Brigade: The History of the Black Hunters."
I just did a speed read through it: and found it quite worthy.
But, it is 100% academic and from France (still nicely written style despite academia and translation). It is not merely a combat history written by SS buffs (not that there is anything wrong with that ) or SS personality driven history --although those aspects are surely in there too. The French professor is utilizing European anthropological theories to explain the whole Dirlewanger phenomena in the context of what they were and meant to the Nazi elite and to Germany as a whole.
you will get mixed reviews on anything. it is not the point.
just exactly who were giving the reviews?
A collector who only wants a photo book with 3rd grade reading or an academic heavy read with NO pix?
that will influence the review.
Get both books if you really have a driving interest in Dirlewanger.
