    cracking book this , written by Armin Bottger a radioman in a panzer iv serving with the 24 panzer division , a normal type guy just trying to survive ,i couldn t put it down , some great colour pics of his tank in Italy , also i never knew that this div had gold panzer piping as apposed to panzer pink !

        Sounds good, thanks for mentioning it. The gold piping was because they carried on cavalry traditions, the 24. PD was formerly the 1. Kavallerie Division, until late 1941.

                  I thought the 24 Pz Div was wiped out in Stalingrad.
                  I have the book Death of the Leaping Horsemen by Jason Mark.

                  I couldn't remember if they rebuilt the Div after the battle but I guess they did.

                    Most of the 24. Panzer Division was wiped out at Stalingrad. But elements were outside the pocket (see the book Blood Red Snow, for an account from one of the men who avoided the encirclement). And the division had a high number of men wounded on the way to Stalingrad, or who were wounded at the city and flown out of the pocket.

                    This meant there was a base of at least 4000 men for recreating the division, including experienced officers. This allowed the new unit to develop into a very good Panzer Division, which was formed in Italy, but spent its combat career on the Eastern Front.
