The author became a "displaced person" after the war, in common with thousands of other Balts. As such, he was able to emigrate to the USA in 1951, and eventually become a medical doctor. This is why he wrote his memoir in English, even though it was published in 1999 in Estonia!
I was lucky enough to have an Estonian friend send me a copy soon after it was published (along with some other books in Estonian that I couldn't read!). It's a short book, and interesting because it covers an unusual topic. I recommend it, if anyone can find it!
