1989-1990: The Year for Bad Made for TV Nazi Movies

The eighties put out some good made-for-TV (mtv) TR movies: "The Bunker"; "Inside the Third Reich"; and "Hitler's SS, Portrait of Evil."

While those were from the early 80's, things got much worse at the end of the decade.

The first is "Hitler's Daughter", the premise of which involves Hitler's daughter being smuggled to the USA, where she runs for President.

All I can remember about it is that it was really bad, but that they did have the blue waffenfarbe on the SS doctor's visor caps.

Next up, probably the worst July 20th plot against Hitler movie made--bad uniforms, bad accents, and bad acting:

& the last of the trio (and probably the one I remember the best, but thats not saying much), "Twist of Fate".

This one involved a former SS officer who was involved with the KZ system, who undergoes plastic surgery, escapes to Israel at the end of the war, becomes a general in the Israeli army, only to be discovered by his own son, who, while doing research on Nazi war criminals, figures out that his father was a Nazi!

I haven't seen any of these in over 20 years. Anyone else seen them, and were they as bad as I remember?!

          Films

          Hi Chris,
Yes, I have seen them all, and they were all very bad. The Plot to Kill Hitler film was bad but it is notable for the fact that the star Brad Davis was dying of AIDS at the time and committed suicide a few years later in 1991.

BTW, you missed one of the worst and that was The Secret War of Jackie's Girls with Mariette Hartley. This made The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission look plausible.

One thing is for certain, you and I watched a lot of bad TV and movies. It was still fun.

          You're friend,
          Jody

            80's made for TV Movies

            Hello,
In my opinion, two of the best made for TV movies from the 80's were The Scarlet and the Black and Escape from Sobibor.

            Regards,
            Jody

Jody, I had forgotten about those movies--good memory!

& who can forget the forgettable sequels to "The Dirty Dozen"--they were cranked out one right after the other for TV audiences. The first came out in 1985, "The Next Mission":

& lastly, in 1988, "The Fatal Mission" which thankfully put an end to these sequels.....

I tried to watch a couple of the follow up Dirty Dozen movies, couldn't do it, had to give 'em a miss

Here is another stinkeroo movie, how about 'Escape to Athena' with Sonny Bono among others

                          Hi Bob,
I agree about Escape to Athena, the problem it was not made for television (like the others were).

                          Regards,
                          Jody

                            Hi,

These "Dirty Dozen" TV sequels are (at least to me) unknown in the UK!
Sounds as if programmers in the USA were 'flogging a dead horse' as we Brits say.
Would love to see one of these TV movies, just out of curiosity!

                            Best wishes,

                            John

Oh,boy....this one was really a stinker....the thing is it have some terrific actors in it. My Only favorite scene in this crapy movies is the William Holden cameo as a "recapture Stalag 14 most ironic officer" and the question by another character "are you still here?"
