suicides by german civilians ???ever heard of that ??

I ran into this article , and wondered if there was any awareness of how bad this suicide thing really was , and why it happened in masse after the Germans surrendered?

I was aware of the many Berlin suicides after reading 'The Last Battle' by Cornelius Ryan many years ago, but not of the suicides on such a large scale across Germany. The articles make for very grim and tragic reflection on what must have been a terrible time for these families.

The last episode of the BBC series "The Nazis A Warning From History" goes into some detail about mass suicide by German civilians faced by the prospect of being under the control of the Russian army.
Some harrowing witness evidence of whole families throwing themselves into rivers tied together to hasten the drowning process etc are given.
Quite uncomfortable viewing, in my estimation.

I cannot recall the exact documentary it was in, however it is true that many women committed suicide after having been raped by the Russians.

Considering the number of women said to have been raped numbered in the millions - you can do that math....

"you can do the math...." well it isn't that simple !

And not only women committed suicide, entire families did, also the die hard Nazis who saw what they believed in coming to an end, and who didn't see a future without uncle Adolf, the Nazi Party or without the Third Reich.......and what to think of the real bad guys who had to fear most what was coming after May 1945 for what they did during the was.

So the suicide in mass wasn't only due to the Russians who were coming around to pay the interest.

It was a generalised comment, truth is no-one can say exactly how many committed suicide and for what reasons. My comment was merely pointing out that there were a large proportion of rape victims who did commit suicide.

Holy Cr*p.....I knew about 'some' of the suicides but was not aware of whole cities doing it. Quite sobering!
