Last night I watched this Japanese fillm: Rengô kantai shirei chôkan: Yamamoto Isoroku. Excellent without Hollywoodisms like sugary romances or "quota afros"* in it.

*"Quota afro"=using black characters in movies even when out pf place.

Ve have vays of making you talk !

Ye...I'd reached the end of my rope watching Hollywood etc showing the Allied hero's wining the war single handedly. In Hollywood versions, all Germans have to be American/British actors, they have to talk english to each other in private, they have to be reeeeeely evil with a scar, monacle, leather coat and they always have to say 've have vays of making you talk' which grinning most evily ! I longed for a more accurate
So when I watched 'The Pianist' it was such a pleasure to see at last at least one German portrayed positively and that he was actually speaking German...yes I can read subtitles !.....and hats off to Roman Polanski for doing this as he had every right to follow the normal Hollywood route. I then watched 'Stalingrad' and it felt so much more authentic watching German actors playing the parts, apparently the uniforms was authentic WW2 also ! I only recently saw 'Das Boot' and loved that too, I would only watch these with subtitles, sorry but couldn't stand to watch them dubbed in English. But my favourite is 'The Downfall' which satisfied my high expectations of historical accuracy (in the main) great acting and a real feel for what it must have been like to be in Berlin in April 1945.

          Hell is for Heroes

Starring Steve McQueen with more than a nod to Combat! (music, production, other stars in the movie who appeared on the TV show). So for Hollywood fans, you get to see McQueen (pre-Great Escape) along with Fess Parker, Bobby Darin, Nick Adams, James Coburn, Bob Newhart, etc., in a black and white film (monochromatic like the way most Americans perceive World War II and by that I mean that ithe conflidt's photographic and motion picture imagery is mainly in black and white) without the epic bombast of a lot of the other films on the top war movie list, most of which this writer has seen. When you watch it, think about the cameramen and behind the scenes guys, likely in their forties, who helped make the film and probably witnessed the real events in the ETO and/or the Pacific Theater. Solid gutsy film which the Hollywood/propaganda/USA Today establish (all of which in earlier permutations made the blasted film, admittedly) never list in these days of SPR, BoBs, etc., ...

Just finished watching the Korean directed film "My Way" and all i can say is wow, though it's not entirely the true story it certainly was amazing. Which brings me to my favorite war movie Brest Fortress, a movie directed by the Russian government believe it or not. I personally find that "Hollywood" war movies are just eye candy while foreign films such as "Brest Fortress" and "My Way" show the raw ugly truth of war. That is not to say i don't watch/like Hollywood war flicks. If you have never heard or never watched either of the movies i mentioned please check out the trailers on YouTube, you wont be disappointed especially Brest Fortress.

                    cheers
                    B

Has the original German language version of 'Stalingrad' complete with English sub-titles ever been released on DVD?

                                Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.
