Saving Private Ryan blunder

At the beginning, in the cemetery, the elderly gentleman thinks back and it fades back to the invasion. At the end of the movie, it fades back to the cemetery, and we learn that the elderly gentleman is Private Ryan (Matt Damon) and he's standing over Tom Hanks' grave.

How could Private Ryan have known what went on in the story (at least half of it) since he didn't even enter the film until half way through?

I know I'm being nit-picky but, this is supposed to be one of the most realistic films about WW2.

Drives me crazy.

It's got to be Patton. George C. Scott was great in this film.
The Lost Battalion (Rick Schroeder) is another and We Were Soldiers (Mel Gibson ans Sam Elliot) 3 of my favorite films.

Just watched THE LOST BATTALION. I cant believe Ive never seen that one before!! If you havent seen it, I highly recommend it. It is a ww1 film, but a true story of the US 77th ID at the end of the war. Thanks for mentioning this one Blut!

My favorite WW2 movie is " Sutjeska " form the early 70's, Yugoslavian war movie showing operation " Schwarz " which was intended to be the destruction of Tito's partisans in mountains of Bosnia !

I like them all: However, I’d break it down into categories:

WW 2: Stalingrad (great movie, I saw it dubbed in English)

Vietnam: Full Metal Jacket, the other Vietnam movies are more classic, I just like Full Metal Jacket.

Just my humble opinions.

Das Boot is on top of the list when i think of the short list of truly good war movies.

Das Boot made a big impression on me when i first saw it, the sounds, the dialogs, the amazing music. This master piece makes be emotional in many ways.

Just saw on free over the air local TV "Attack" with Jack Palance.
I liked it, as I grew up watching the "Combat" TV show, and as
well other similar looking productions such as "Hell is for Heroes"
with Steve McQueen. The one thing they have in common is over
sized German insignia uniforms, that actually date back to WW2.
MGM made these movie prop uniform eagles, which were used in
lots of Hollywood movies, including the SS troops in "Attack". Rarer
than the actual "real" WW2 German made eagles, as only a few
examples have survived multiple film use, and later TV shows like
Combat & Hogan's Heroes. Look forward to more I haven't seen.

Just watched Kokoda. What a powerful film that is!

Sorry I have to disagree that movie is absolute rubbish Its basically a horror/slasher film set in ww2 and there is barely a thread of thruth to it...

Not sure If It has been mentioned yet but an absolute all time favourite of mine is the lighthorsemen... Its the story of the charge of Beersheeba by the Australian lighthorse in ww1.

Also cross of iron, the thin red line and we were soldiers are great.

Spielberg never even implies that Private Ryan knew what was going on. It's not meant to be Ryan recalling the entire movie as a memory. The grave scene at the beginning and end are just bookends. Nothing more. The story in between is just the story by itself.

Just for fun, yes,yes,yes, to "Where Eagles Dare". I can't imagine any TR collector not liking this movie. The ultimate in entertainment.
