The only gripe I have with that film is Gibson's omition of the best character who took part in the battle simply because he is of British birth I would assume. The guy is an absolute nobber

      Here's Rick Rescorla's gallant record http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Rescorla

The list is missing a lot of movies in my opinion. For example:

          Thin red line
          Der untergang
          Katyn
          Battle of Britain

            from the film ...

My favorite is the 1943 movie "The Fallen Sparrow", with John Garfield.
About a military unit flag, a film about the spirit behind such flags, and
about never surrendering ones unit flag no matter what the cost. I like
all movies with flags - the film record is 1200+ in "Kingdom of Heaven".

            ......

Or THEY WERE EXPENDABLE starring JOHN WAYNE. & IN HARMS WAY starring Kirk Douglas & once again John Wayne. How bout PT109 starring JFK? To me the most distrubing Scene in a movie...The knife fight in SPR.
Man through all these additional pages & nobody has listed any of these that i listed. Hasn't anybody seen any of these movies?

Not a film but the documentary
"the world at war " is the ultimate war film,

but for me Das Boot is NO1

with enemy at the gate and saving private ryan a close second,

Band of Brothers is my favorite, but another movie that hasn't gotten much love from this thread is "Rough Riders" with Tom Berenger, Sam Elliot, etc. That film is probably one of the most realistic war movies that I've ever seen. Unlike a lot of war movies, even the acting by the extras is very good, few of the lame, flailing deaths that you often see. The cinematography of the film is also great. Sure, there are some historical accuracies, but over all, it's still a very good movie and definitely in my Top 10.

                          best scenes

Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas was a great movie, even if it was a bit of a bummer at the end.

The reason I mention it though is for the AWESOME attack scene into no-man's-land.

Starting with Kirk's walk down the floor boards of his own trench to going over the top, this scene is very, very well done.

                              Best war film

SERGEANT YORK, the film didn't give a true reflection of what happened but they got York right. The Coop was outstanding. Great story.
