i watched an old film today "retreat ,hell" about the Americans in Korea , good gritty film , intrestingly the Chinese were using schmeisser machine pistols

One of the best (and longet!) i ve seen so far is "The eagle has landed". Such a wonderful cast and great movie!!!. The other, is of course "the Downfall". I love that kind of movie who keep you thrill !

Impossible to read through all the replys but here are my two cents.
I voted for "others" and my favorite movie is:

"STOSSTRUPP 1917"

I don't believe there is an english title.
This german movie is from 1934 and based on the book "Der Glaube an Deutschland" from Hans Zöberlein. It tells the story of an assault group in ww1.
Before this my favorite movie was "All quiet at the western front" but this film really makes me feel like sitting in a bunker getting mad from the noise of all the exploding grenades. Depressive - so impressive.

picky collectore need realisim in movies!!!!!

The Problem with war movies is that people into Militaria become very picky on accuracy..this means that the tanks used in films like a bridge too far or Patton are totally a mess.I believe if we talk about accuracy it would probabbly have to be Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler List.(all Spilebergs movies) But my favorite war action movie is Gladiator.

I have to be honest I do find myself picking minor fault with films be it uniform detail or maybe modern US tanks used instead of period German tanks. Check out "the train" and see how skillfully they work around these issues (ie cammo netting and branches on the tanks on flat back wagons ) they are almost certainly post war tanks but the production team have managed to keep a superb period feel to the film. I would say this is Schindlers list quality in a 1960's film (the same black and white realisim) For these reasons this has to be my favourite. The scene where the Paris shunting yards are being bombed is fantasticly realistic. and the whole story is compelling stuff.

A very long thread but I went through the whole thing tonight. Almost impossible to pick one movie although Das Boot, Der Untergang and Apocalypse Now have always rated very high for me for totally different reasons. Saving Private Ryan definitely does not rate very high and I'm glad that many in the thread agree. WWI - Blue Max. Only one person dared mention U-571 which I am glad about since it was a total pile of crap (as was Pearl Harbor). Many more mentioned in this thread that are excellent and some suggestions that I will follow up on. That's the great thing about best and worst lists - it's all a matter of opinion.

By the way, can't remember if it was mentioned that The Night of the Generals was based on a book by Hans Hellmut Kirst who wrote many other excellent books - the Gunner Asch books are fantastic.

Sebastian Koch as Stauffenberg in the film of the same name. Much better than our friend cruise.
He was also excellent and most convincing as Speer in 'Speer And Him'. Constantin films make the best in my opinion.

Since I am new here I don't want to "step on toes" or "ruffle feathers" but to have a list of the "Best War Movies" of all time and not include "Patton" is like listing the greatest German Generals of WWII and not including Erwin Rommel. I'll agree with most of the list but "A Bridge Too Far"??? You might as well have put "Midway" on the list. "A Bridge Too Far" was a good idea but never accomplished what it set out to do: capture the magic of "The Longest Day" by getting half of Hollywood to sign on to the film (Midway suffered the same fate, but also suffered from a senseless sub-plot). Simply put if anyone compiles a list of the Ten Greatest War films, "Patton" would make 99 out of 100 lists. HOWEVER, and as one of my professors used to say "there is always a however", my personal favorite WAR film is "Where Eagles Dare". My "Best War Film" of all time: Das Boot hands down. Don't get me wrong, I liked "A Bridge Too Far" but I think it suffered from too many Big names.

for me it would be PRIVATE RYAN on your list but here are some great films if you dont mind subtitles.
ASSEMBLY (about korean war before USA involment.)

THE WINTER WAR( about finnish/russain conflict prior to ww2)

BROTHERHOOD(story of two brothers on opposing sides of the korean conflict.)

and hopefully ATTACK ON LENINGRAD(which i havent watched yet but parts seen on youtube look pretty good.)
