It's close between Das Boot, Saving Private Ryan, Stalingrad, Enemy at the Gates and Der Undertang

      Salut,

      Das Boot

317 Section - the story of a section in Indochina in 1954 after DBP . By far the most realistic war film ever - Private Ryan is kid's afternoon TV in comparaison

So many great movies to choose from...some of my favorites are:

All Quiet on the Western Front (Original)
          Zulu
          Das Boot
          SPR

but in the end my choice would be Breaker Morant, which is in the running for my favorite movie of all genres.

"No; it was not quite so handsome. As to rules and regulations, we had no Red Book, and knew nothing about them. We were out fighting the Boers, not sitting comfortably behind barb-wire entanglements; we got them and shot them under Rule 303!"

          -Harry Harbord "Breaker" Morant

Hard to beat Das Boot. Saving Private Ryan was well done and Platoon is good too. Never seen it but I hear Tora Tora Tora is good also.

              Hi,
IMO the best movie is "The eagle has landed" 1976 with Michael Caine.
              regards

                Hello Yves,

do you know of a stockist for this film?

I have seen it on Amazon for comedy prices, but have had no luck finding it elsewhere.

                  Recommendations

                  Good topic.
I have got a bunch of war movies recommendations in this thread.

I thought that I would name some good war movies that I would like to recommend that I haven’t seen earlier in this thread.

Someone mention “The Unknown Soldier” from 1955 earlier and it’s a very good movie.
But personally I like better the remake of this movie from 1985
I don’t know if it’s available in the US, but it’s for sale in Scandinavia with English subtitle at https://www.cdon.com

Two another good war movies from Finland is “Ambush” and “Beyond Enemy Lines”

There hasn’t been made too many good Norwegian war movies but “The Last Lieutenant” is not bad at all.

The French “Captain Conan” is a good movie from WW1 and later against the reds in Russia.

                  British WW1 drama.
                  All the King's Men
                  The Trench

                  Some POW movies.
                  The McKenzie break
                  King Rat
                  Colditz

                  A few modern war movies.
                  Bravo Two Zero
                  Warriors
                  The Wild Geese
                  Uncommon Valor
                  Vietnam: Australian mini series

                  WW2 movies:
Piece of cake Miniseries about British airman in 39-40
                  Dieppe: Canadian miniseries
The way ahead: Good war flick with David Niven
                  Cockleshell heroes
                  The last bullet
The big red one –The Reconstruction
                  Sword of honour
                  Two men went to war
                  The night of the generals
                  The young lions
                  The Devils brigade
                  A midnight clear
                  El Alamein
                  Silent night
The bunker: Kind of a horror movie
                  The Heroes

Most of the movies are available in DVD format.
Of the movies that I have listed up only Warriors, Vietnam and The Heroes aren’t available in DVD as far as I know. If someone knows otherwise I would be grateful if they would let me know.
I buy my DVD from Play.uk, Play.us, Amazon, Amazon.uk, Amazon.ca and CDON in Scandinavia.

If it's strictly WWII were's talking about, then:

                          Downfall
                          Stalingrad
                          Das Boot

Blackhawk Down is my favorite post '45 war movie.

                              hi,

and this is my best list:

                              the thin red line

                              full metal jacket

the deep hunter ( Robert de niro & Michael Cimino, anyone had remebered it, camon!)

                              paths of glory

                              12 o'clock high

all quiet on the western front (1930)

                              patton (J. mason)

                              starship troopers

I due colonnelli (italian movie with alberto sordi)

tutti a casa (italian movie with alberto sordi)

                              the dam buster

... and many more that i don't remember now

                              PS.

SPR it's a bad film: too much eroic, characters so beautiful, it's only a pop corn movie, no thrue inside
