Well ... the set arrived from Amazon today. Came in a nice little box with 5 DVD's (each of 4 episodes @ 50 min each). Watched episode 1 tonight

I will post the pics of each DVD that details the episodes. Very well done. Some interesting footage that you don't see in the "usual" documentries. Although shot in the 1970's when Burt Lancaster visited the Soviet Union ... it is intermingled with some present day (1970's present day ) views of the battle locations.

                        Hi Darell,

when the chance arises can you post a fresh critique of what you have watched? It sounds quite intriguing.

                          Patrick ... I got through Disc # 1 last night. 4 episodes.

While I can do that .. I did happen to see these on rerun about 10 years ago. I taped them onto VHS, but have not seen them since.

Once I see the series I will do a little synopsis.

One item I did NOT know about ... if you see the back of the box ... it says that the series was pulled off the air in (1980?) after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. There is an interview with Rod McKuen writer who mentions this in his interview a few years back.

Much of the footage is new if you have not seen this series before. That was one goal of the crew that did the filming in the USSR at the time. Much Russian Archival footage from sources never seen before or since.

This series tells the story mainly from the Russian Point of view. Although much of the footage is from German sources as well..

                          More later ....

Managed to get through all 20 episodes after today.

Like I mentioned before it was over 20 years since I last saw these episodes.

                            A few thoughts and comments.

First up .. one thing to keep in mind is that this was a Soviet / American "collaborative" effort in the 1970's. This is very important. Because of this, the Soviets are shown in a "good" light of Good vs. Evil (the Nazis).

You won't see or hear of the pre-War Purges, the inside details of the Russo-German Non Aggression Pact in August 1939. You won't hear of the Russian brutality or revenge on the Germans once their territory was invaded in 1945.

Interestingly enough the Russian murders of Polish officers in 1939 at Katyn is covered, but told that this was a Nazi "crime".

The coverage is obviously from the Russian point of view, but does offer German footage and some interesting German News reel coverage not seen before.

The footage is in many cases unique and itself worth the investment. If you can watch it with an open mind realizing it was a 1978 production.

An interesting addition was a two part analysis by the Professor of Russian History (at U of Cincinnati) Willard Sunderland. He dissects the series from a "modern" perspective. While it doesn't say when the interview took place, it was at least done in the 90's maybe later.

He covers many of the areas of the film that errors in telling the "truth" or the "true story". He also has a good summary of how Russia would be more prone to address these issues today vs. 1970's when the series was made.

Overall ... this is a good series. For nothing else to see some of the not-before-released footage. I would think true scholars of the war will find a many details incorrectly stated or shown, but at the end of the day ... this would make a good addition to ones library if you are at all interested in the Eastern Front of WW2.
