A New Book

Our American friend, Carsten H. Fries, published an impressive book in 2010 concerning the German cavalry in the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht. It is a comprehensive work that encompasses the time-frame form 1920 to 1945.

In its 448 pages, the broad spectrum of cavalry in the final phase of its history is seamlessly portrayed in word and picture.

In the process, the author was able to make good use of American source material, which wound up in the United States as spoils of war and is therefore no longer present in Germany.

The title, Riding into the Twilight, suggests the historical situation. To a certain extent, it was the Götterdämmerung of the German cavalry, even though it lasted until after the final capitulation. It was not until June 1945 that the last horse soldiers dismounted in Baden-Wurttemberg, with the horses being given over to agricultural use by the respective regional governing bodies, since there were hardly any draft animals left. For once, a good and sensible end. Moreover, their riders had been sent back to Germany on short notice and released, thus sparing them captivity.

It is interesting to note that that this historical treatment was not done by a German citizen, as is so often the case. It demonstrates one more time the value and interest that German military history has outside of Germany and the type of objectivity with which it is treated, even if, when observed from a historical perspective, it only concerns a segment of an important theme.

The book fills a gap. As a result of the comprehensive and superb pictures, the text is understandable to even those whose English is limited. Among other things, it is also a treasure trove for those interested in uniforms.

We thank the author for addressing and presenting this topic so comprehensively.
