I agree it's a superb piece. It first came to my attention because it is used in the 1986 film "Platoon"

Yep. it's Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber who was American I think.
I thought it was meant to be a piece about the sadness caused by war and associate it with WWI (maybe I saw the same film as Stickgenade) but it was actually composed 20 years later in 1936 ?.
Only Nimrod by Elgar betters this song imo as a suitably respectful soundtrack to war footage.
