How good are his book to gain information about the Eastern Front?

Paul Carell is a good author. He has a German bias to his writing, but some of his are classics that every WWII buff should read. Favorites of mine are Scorched Earth, Hitler Moves East, and Foxes of the Desert.

    Pretty much necessary reading.

his books make good reading- as said very pro-German but as he was a highly placed official in the regime its another interesting angle

x2 what the previous posters wrote. IIRC, he was Von Ribbentropp's press secretary, so don't expect to find any mention of atrocities or second thoughts about Hitler's policies.
        A lot of great detail.

Excellent books. Hitler Moves East and Scorched Earth are the first two volumes of a planned trilogy of the war on the Eastern Front. They make for excellent reading and use many of the divisions' war diaries.

After the first two volumes were completed, his publisher told him they weren't interested in a third volume as the sales of his books were not good enough. The third volume was to cover the retreats up to and including the Battle of Berlin. And that is a real shame.

Did he have a commission in the SS?

Yes, Scorched Earth is excellent. It is definitely a biased approach but is actually a pretty concise study of the mid-war battles on the Eastern Front from a military perspective.
