Eine Frau in Berlin (A woman in Berlin)

I really enjoyed the book (I've read the book in french). It is a "pure" testimony that reveled the the horrors of a Berlin crushed over the Red Army. This book helped me to understand the life of the citizens (woman particularly) after the defeat of Deutchland. It is a "must" for those who have not read it yet.

IMHO, the movie was just as good as the book. Both are hard to stomach.
As I said before, this is an excellent bookend to "Downfall"--watch them back to back--a lot of the scenes depicted in "A Woman in Berlin" were taking place at the same time as those depicted in Downfall.

As I am always looking for a good WWII book to read and possible add to my library, this thread peaked my interest. I took the book out from the library. It is the 2005 Metropolitian book, stated first American edition translated by Philip Boehm. I also found the 1954 Hartcourt,Brace and Co stated first edition on ebay and bought it. It is translated by James Stern.
The 1954 book arrived after I was well into the 2005 book but I compared the text of each. Not unusual, there are minor, subtle differences in the translation that really, I think, effect the true emotion of the writer. So now, I read a chapter from the 2005 book then read the same chapter from the 1954 book. It is an intresting comparison. I like both books equally so far but I think the 2005 books translation is a bit harsher in terms of translated words.
Regardless, either book is a great read. When I finish the books, on to the movie next!!
